I got this top for a steal last month from Express. I was really drawn to the dark fall floral and tie neck. Part of what I love about finding a great floral is the versatility. A versatile floral has many different colors in the print. That allows options when mixing and matching. I’ve already paired this top with blush jeans and this pink skirt. I can imagine it with navy, turquoise/teal, purple, and several neutrals.
When you want to build a versatile closet, thinking about the ability to mix and match with clothing you already have is crucial. With a top, I ask myself:
- Can you tuck it in? Can you leave it untucked?
- Does it go with at least 3 of your bottoms?
- Can it be dressed up or down?
- Where would you wear it? Work? Out? On a day off?
- What colors match or compliment it? What accessories or other clothing you pair with it?
- Would it still fit if you were to gain or loose 5-10 pounds?
- How does it layer? Can you layer it over something? Can you wear a cardigan or blazer over top?
- Do you even like it?
If a top doesn’t meet at least 4 of these requirements I don’t get it. Asking myself these questions has helped me to completely change my closet around!
